I was consulting with a client on the best way to launch a new website. They want to be #1 in the search engines for keywords that drive sales but also build an educational / informative resource center. Many businesses have similar goals, they understand they need to educate their customers before the purchase.

I wanted to share with our readers how our company launches our own websites. We need to educate our customers and at the same time want to be #1 for the services we sell. I hope by seeing how our company would launch a new site you may see ideas on how you can launch your new website or micro-sites.

Case Study: WebBizDesigns.com

We have helped many companies plan out their website by wireframing / prototyping for years. We made the decision ion 2009 to create a website that sold just these services. We decided the most effective & cost effective strategy would be a backwards marketing strategy; i.e. educate first, then sell

Even though our end goal is to sell website architecture / web prototyping services, in 2010 we threw up a quick blog on webbizdesigns.com. We wrote 15 informational blog posts about website architecture, web prototyping, and other services we would eventually sell.

What have been the results?

We are on the 1st – 3rd page of Google for many highly searched keywords such as “Website architecture, web prototyping, web application architecture, website planning,” and rank for 1,500 others!

All of this from writing very targeted content organized in a way the search engines would love. In 2011 all of this content is going to be just a simple “blog” link on WebBizDesigns.com. But when we make the switch, we will be #1 for the exact keywords that will drive new business.

How does this benefit you?

You can do the same with a blog, resource center, or Question & Answer Software. For example, if were going to build a website that sold nutrition books, videos, meal plans, etc… you could create a Question & Answer website, similar to answers.com or Yahoo Answers, that simple answered questions people had about nutrition.

You can create this resource center on the domain name that you plan to use to sell nutrition books, videos, meal plans, etc… in the future. What will happen is your URL will rank for 1,000′s of keyword phrases / questions. If you hire an internet marketing company for SEO Services, results will be greater.

Then, we can flip the switch. This informational, educational, and content oriented site becomes just a small link on your website called “Have Questions?” But, when you do you will be #1 for all the keywords that will drive new business for your company.

It is what I recommended for the client, it is what our company does, and it is what you can do. I call it it backwards marketing or backwards SEO or backwards internet marketing.

Social media is going to rule the Web until at least 2012 – according to a post by Justin Kistner, a Social Evangelist at web analytics company Webtrends. Kistner also claims that Facebook has become the king of social media. In a panel at a Portland event today called Lunch 2.0, Kistner said that the current era of the Web “is Facebook’s game to lose.” More here from Justin also a roundup at ReadWriteWeb.

On the heels of its Promoted Tweets ad product, Tweeter has introduced another type of advertising: Promoted Trending Topics, where brands pay to appear below the “trending topics” on the site. The first company to try out the concept is Disney/Pixar with the trend, not surprisingly, of Toy Story 3. It is, writes Mashable’s Pete Cashmore in a guest post at CNN, an ingenious idea: “the perfect way to generate revenue from the popular social network without infuriating users…Brands long to be a part of the conversation, and Promoted Trends create buzz around a product or service without vexing the user.” More Here >>

Got to talk to Jeff Foster again and we covered some great information. Listen to the show below.

We first talk about what type of things you should really be focusing on in the search engine world. How to create content and the elements that make up a great content strategy.

Then we move on with the ever important aspect of search marketing–link building.

What are the things you have to be focused on when building links to rank within search engines. Does google like link building. This is something that I have found alot of small business and people have really been taken advantage of. Jeff gives some great advice on what to look for when hiring out link building.

Then we talk about Synomyms and how much of a roll they play into search.

I highly suggest you read this new post by Jason Baer on Are you ready for the opportunity economy. This is something I would put into practice within you, your organization or your company right now. I highly suggest this concept. We talk a little about this as well.

He goes into what is a great concept. The opportunity economy. How to set yourself up for the opportunities that present themselves in this fast moving and real time environment. With the advent of the search engine and now social media it is becoming easier and easier to connect and find people and situations where you can help.

Also I’d like to mention a few things that I’ve covered on my personal blog:

Recently the 3 Screen Report by Nielsen was released. This covers mobile, internet, and television usage in the US. While this report is one that I follow it also gives a little insight into how we consume all media. check out the post on the 3 Screen Report.

Elements of Viral. An great example of this comes from CCCP who started as a production agency, but quickly found out that they could easily vertically integrate advertising in their business model. I love some of these guys ideas and what they have put together. View the viral post here.

Having an authoritative website helps you create more leads, prospects, and sales. Not only will this help you when someone searches for your website but it allows you to create a launching pad for other marketing efforts. There are some things to keep in mind when creating authority around what you do. Today we talk a little about this and cover things such as…

Why Creating content means more than search engine optimization. A high level of quality in your content is needed in order to establish a high level of authority.

Why the adult learning theory is important in the content you create and is one of the biggest factors in creating leads and prospects

How thinking about a inverted pyramid is important when creating content

Some quick tips on using the big four (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube). Consistent success with social media can lead to a lot of traffic, links, exposure, and authority.

When to worry about Search engine optimization

Why commenting on other blogs builds authority

Remember authority is built over time and with trust.

Today’s idea: Old media still has not learned that new media has a place at the table.

You might have saw the story the other day about how a woman follows Google Maps “walking” directions, gets hit, then sues. While this is once more proof of our litigious society and maybe our fall from general common sense there is one thing about this story you might not know.

The story behind the story is that this was broken by Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineLand. He himself references and attributes a friend of his Gary Price of ResourceShelf. Essentially he goes through how he released the information and the mainstream media ran with it without any attribution–which they would have never done to another old media source.

What’s the Big Deal?

You could say this is just a bunch of bloggers saying “look at me, look at me” but in this cases and most cases of the last year this shows a true lack professional courtesy. Yes most bloggers don’t have an editor and yes anybody can get up tomorrow and call themselves a news blogger.

That doesn’t excuse a news organization (new media or old media) of not following common courtesy. What if it were reversed and the blogger had taken a story that grew legs went viral without attributing an old media source?

The Larger Issue

We need to recognize that new media is here and has changed the media landscape for good. The mainstream media has a few problems beyond this simple courtesy play. First they have an archaic cost structure, delivery structure, and a general chip on their shoulder on who should be a “journalist”.

To be called a journalist I do believe that you should have the highest standards–also that this is something that is earned and not something that some governing body can bestow. Where the old media gets it wrong is putting a line in the sand at the point of delivery or size of an organization.

Some of the best journalism and breaking of stories has been done by new media from social media, to blogs to the Drudge Report. What do you think… do you think Bloggers deserve the same respect and authority as mainstream journalists?

When you think about the state of marketing these days it can give you a dizzy feeling. With new technology, new networks, the slow death of old media, and most recently the release of the iPad. I’ve included a video below that clearly demonstrates why it’s sometimes not too wise to be an early adopter to a new platform. I mention this now because here in a few short months Twitter will be releasing their sponsored Tweets–and what I see soon to follow is a rush by other platforms and the search engines to sell us on real time search marketing.

Let’s get back to the iPad. Apples and Steve Jobs answer to the sad state of mobile and iPad advertising is what is called the iAd. What is the iAd? Here is Apple’s press release:

“iAd, Apple’s new mobile advertising platform, combines the emotion of TV ads with the interactivity of web ads. Today, when users click on mobile ads they are almost always taken out of their app to a web browser, which loads the advertiser’s webpage. Users must then navigate back to their app, and it is often difficult or impossible to return to exactly where they left. iAd solves this problem by displaying full-screen video and interactive ad content without ever leaving the app, and letting users return to their app anytime they choose.”

When Steve Jobs talked about the release of the iAd mobile marketing platform he virtually said it was going to create a perpetual motion machine… okay he didn’t go that far but he did have the room think this was a drastic change in marketing.

To be fair it does improve mobile marketing by leaps and bounds. But I wanted to cover a deeper issue here. That is the issue of early adoption.

Since Tomoson.com gives bloggers the opportunity to review products for Free we have added another value proposition to the mix. If the promoter agrees to it, the blogger can run a contest on their website giving away the product they just reviewed for FREE.

There are two benefits to this system.

The Blogger Benefit

As a blogger you want more people to follow your blog and what you’re writing about. What better way to increase followers then giving away a FREE product to the readers of your blog! As a blogger you can run the contest anyway you want and in the end you simply need to contact the promoter in Tomoson.com with the winner(s). Once you do this Tomoson.com will update the promoter to send out the products. As the promoter ships products out he/she can update Tomson.com with tracking information so you know your readers are getting the products.

The Promoter Benefit

The benefit of Tomoson.com is that it gets your product in front of thousands if not millions of people with minimal cost. Besides millions of people seeing your product bloggers will link to your website increasing your search engine ranking by building backlinks (a critical component to any SEO campaign). When you allow a blogger to give away a product in one of their contests it gives your product exposure twice, so you (the promoter) gets twice the views and twice the links for SEO.

Simply put contests are one of the reasons we feel Tomoson.com will help promotes sell more products.
